It doesn’t matter what makes you replace your garbage disposal with. What makes it more significant is how to replace a Moen Garbage Disposal.
Fortunately, you are in the right place.
Replacing a garbage disposal is a piece of cake. With the right tools and guidance, you can DIY-install the disposal unit within an hour.
This guideline breaks the installation procedure into two main parts- removing the old disposal and installing the new one.
The ‘removing the old disposal’ has five steps. On the other hand, the ‘installing the new garbage disposal’ has eight steps to complete the installation procedure.
What Tools You Should Have At Your Fingertips:
- A new garbage disposal
- Hammer
- Adjustable crescent wrench
- Phillips or flathead screwdriver
- Wooden dowel or steel punch
- Plumber’s putty
How To Install A Moen Garbage Disposal?
I break down the Moen Garbage Disposal Installation procedure into two parts, including:
- Removing the old garbage disposal
- Installing the new garbage disposal
Continue to scroll to walk through the step-by-step instructions.
How To Remove Moen Garbage Disposal?
To remove your old Moen Garbage Disposal, follow the instructions below:
Step 1. Unplug the Disposal or Turn the Power Off
Crawl down the cabinet and locate the power cord of your garbage disposal attached to an electric outlet. Then, unplug the power cord from the outlet.
If your garbage disposal is hardwired, always turn off the electric supply at the circuit breaker or fuse box.
Step 2. Disconnect the Drain Line
Use an adjustable wrench to detach the drain line attached to the disposal discharge tube.
Step 3. Remove The Dishwasher Drain Hose (If You Have A Dishwasher)
You can locate the dishwasher discharge tube at the top of the drain line. Then, loosen the clamp that attaches the dishwasher discharge hose to the disposal. Use a screwdriver to unclamp the discharge hose.
Step 4. Remove The Old Garbage Disposal
Support your garbage disposal when performing this step or the disposal unit may fall while disconnecting the lower mounting assembly.
Locate the lower mounting ring (it has three tabs) at the top of the garbage disposal where it connects to the drain.
Use your hands to turn the mounting ring left until it comes loose to remove the disposal from the sink flange.
If you cannot turn the mounting ring with your hands, insert a screwdriver into one of the three tabs that provide additional leverage. Now, turn the mounting ring counterclockwise until it releases from the drain.
Step 5. Hardwire Remove (Skip this step if your unit isn’t hardwired)
Double-check that you turn off the electric supply at the circuit breaker or fuse box.
Once you remove the disposal, flip the garbage disposal and remove the electrical cover plate.
Then, Use a screwdriver to remove the green ground wire. Remove wire nuts from black and white power wires and separate disposer wires from power cable wires.
Loosen the screws on the cable clamp and separate the cable from the disposer.
Now, you are ready to install your new garbage disposal.
Installing the New Garbage Disposal
After removing the old garbage disposal, it’s time to install the new garbage disposal.
Go along with these step-by-step guidelines to install your new garbage disposal:
Install the Drain Assembly
Check the drain assembly to verify if you can reuse it. If the existing drain assembly and the mounting ring seals are in good condition, it will be a time-saver for you.
Otherwise, you should replace the drain assembly.
Regarding this, remove the old drain assembly and clean the sink surface thoroughly. Verify that the sink surface is dry after cleaning.
Next, apply a 1/2-inch thick band of plumber’s putty around the sink flange, then firmly insert it into the drain.
Ensure you install the drain assembly, centering it in the drain opening.
To make a tight seal, place weight on top of the drain assembly to press it into place.
Ensure you place a rag between the drain assembly and the weight to prevent scratching the drain assembly.
Disassemble the Mounting Assembly
Remove the garbage disposal from the packaging.
Disassemble the mounting assembly from the disposal by turning the lower mount ring until it disengages from the ramps on the upper mounting ring.
Then, remove the upper mounting ring (G), backup flange (E), and fiber gasket (D) from the sink flange (C).
Note the sequence of these parts as they are stacked in the correct re-assembly sequence. Keep these parts together and set them aside.
Hand-tighten the Mounting Screws (F) (x3) onto the Upper Mounting Ring (G).
Reassemble The Mounting Assembly
In this step, you should go under the sink. Ensure you turn the flashlight on your phone so that you have plenty of light.
Install the fiber gasket closest to the sink, the backup flange (second), and the upper mounting ring onto the sink flange.
Then, secure these three elements in place by aligning the snap ring and tightening the screws.
Knock Out the Dishwasher Discharge Plug (Skip this step if you don’t have a dishwasher)
Removing the factory-installed discharge plug is crucial if you have a dishwasher. If you don’t remove this plug from the disposal, waste from the dishwasher fails to flush through the dishwasher discharge hose.
To remove the knock-out plug, insert a wooden dowel into the dishwasher discharge line of the disposal and strike it with a hammer.
Connect the Garbage Disposal To The Mounting Assembly
Before connecting the disposal to the mounting assembly under the sink, check that the Lower Mounting Ring (J) is in place and the Cushion Mount (I) is engaged securely around the top lip of the disposal.
Tighten the lower mounting ring until all three mounting tabs lock over the hump at the top of the ramps of the upper mounting ring.
If you can’t turn, insert a screwdriver through one of the tubes on the lower mounting ring to provide extra leverage, and use adjustable pliers for final tightening.
Attach the Discharge Elbow to the Disposal
Make sure you flush the gasket to the flange on the Elbow. Install the provided pre-assembled discharge elbow (L), gasket (M) assembly, and elbow flange (N). Install and tighten two screws (O) x2 evenly with a screwdriver.
Connect The Dishwasher Discharge Hose To The Disposal
You can skip this step if you don’t have a dishwasher. Attach the dishwasher discharge hose to the outlet from where you knock out the plug.
Slide the clamp on the dishwasher discharge hose to the disposal’s dishwasher discharge outlet and secure it with the screwdriver.
Attach The Discharge Elbow To the Drain Line
Reconnect the discharge elbow to the drain line. Use a wrench to secure the drain line where it attaches to the disposal discharge tube. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
Remove tools, packaging, or materials used for installation from the sink. Ensure all plumbing connections are tight and follow all plumbing codes and ordinances.
Finally, you are ready to go. Before operating the garbage disposal, run the water and check for looks.
